INDIANAPOLIS — A tense exchange between a tech industry lawyer and state legislators at a national conference Monday underscored how determined many state leaders are to pass laws that protect young people from harmful content on social media.
“The bottom line is, tech is trying to give you smoke and mirrors,” said Minnesota Rep. Kristin Bahner (D). “They do not want you to realize that the time has come when the industry must act. If they cannot or will not act on their own, we as legislators are there to step in. We can and we will.”
