Republican lawmakers in Tennessee and Texas are gearing up this year to offer all children taxpayer subsidies for private education, a benefit supporters say would allow parents to customize their kids’ schooling but opponents say would hurt public schools and the state budget.
Lawmakers in other GOP-led states like Idaho and Montana may also advance universal school choice bills, said Robert Enlow, president and CEO of Indiana-based school choice advocacy group EdChoice. Lawmakers in still more states, such as Utah, may expand existing programs.
