The redistricting wars, re-ranked

The mid-decade chaos has been upended since the previous ranking.

Less than a year before voters head to the polls, lawmakers and judges in half a dozen states are racing to complete work on an unprecedented outbreak of mid-decade redistricting, spurred by President Donald Trump’s determination to maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

In October, we ranked the states pursuing remapping schemes based on the likelihood of their success. Now, after an unexpected court decision and a massive pressure campaign from the White House, we revisit the state of modern gerrymandering in America.
