2023 was a banner year for gun control laws, with blue states passing bills designed to address the recent surge in mass shootings.

The new laws include an excise tax on gun and ammunition retailers and manufacturers; assault-weapons bans; and extreme-risk-protection orders, known as red flag laws, which allow guns to be taken away from individuals deemed by a court to be a threat to themselves or others.assault-weapons bans.
