Zoning law changes coming as states address housing crisis

At least 11 states are currently considering requiring cities to add density or have already passed such laws this session.

The Democratic-led Washington State legislature and the Republican-led Montana legislature both dealt a blow to single-family zoning this week, passing bills that would force cities to allow duplexes on residential lots.

The Washington bill now heads to Gov. Jay Inslee’s (D) desk, and the Montana bill to Gov. Greg Gianforte’s (R).
