Zoning preemption for religious organizations stalls in multiple states

Supporters say the ‘YIGBY’ proposals address affordable housing shortage, but bills failed to advance.

Lawmakers in at least 15 states this year proposed lifting local zoning rules to make it easier for churches and other religious organizations to build housing on land they own. 

Supporters say the proposals support charitable organizations’ efforts to address the affordable housing shortage. The bills even have a feel-good nickname: “Yes in God’s Backyard,” or YIGBY.
